Chang Yul Park in Thimphu, Bhutan, is a seven-acre urban green space along the Wangchhu River, developed as a royal initiative by His Majesty The King. The park seamlessly blends Bhutanese cultural heritage with modern green infrastructure, focusing on sustainability, cultural preservation, and community engagement. It features expansive meadows, a riverside gallery, a rose garden, and an arboretum showcasing over 50 native plant species. A floating bar, constructed with intricate timber craftsmanship, adds a unique architectural element.
The park also includes a community hub with a cafeteria, performance plaza, and underground restrooms, creating a central space for social interaction and events. Key attractions include an adventure playground for children, an outdoor gym, walking and jogging paths, and elevated bridges offering panoramic views of the river. The park is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring ramps for persons with disabilities and electric vehicle charging stations, aligning with Thimphu’s low-emission transport network.
Constructed over 18 months at a cost of more than Nu 150 million, Chang Yul Park is part of Thimphu’s broader Green Infrastructure and Open Space Master Plan (2023-2047). It aims to promote environmental sustainability, carbon sequestration, and enhanced urban green spaces. The park sets a new standard for future urban projects in Bhutan, enhancing the quality of life for residents while serving as a vibrant destination for recreation, cultural activities, and tourism.
